if you just cruise the car wont burn oil.. once you really open it up... and once the turbo spools... it burns oil like crazy... some one told me about the oil return line on the turbo having to be straight down?

well first off what car do you have. ANd second welcome to the world of Turbos. Our Evo spits out a black puff balls after every gear when pushed hard. Just DD it doesn't do it.

What Car do you have?

What mods do you have?

Are you tuned?

well like I said, turbo cars do burnt oil. Especially under higher load. Are we talking about consistant smoke while gas is mashed? Or just a puff of smoke when changing gears? If its a long stream of black smoke I would suggest that your rings are getting or are shot. If its lighter colored smoke I am suggesting head gasket.

I know that if the oil return line is blocked that the oil will spill over into the turbo, thus being forced into the exhaust system, therefore leaving you with a GREAT deal of white and black colored smoke. I have seen this before. Although your turbo will get very loud, almost sounding like a supercharger.

if your oil return is not flowing enough oil, it can back up into the turbo and burn it. Rob222 is correct, a braided oil return line is a fantastic idea. it must be oil resistant. a regular rubber hose will turn into jelly on the inside.

make sure you are not over full on oil

you could have too much oil pressure into the oil supply into the turbo, causing it to push past the seals.

you can suck the oil right out of the motor and into the turbo inlet through the breathers if the aren't set up right. is your PCV and breather system all properly hooked up and functioning?

it could be a shot turbo. if you run 25-30 pounds of boost out of a non ball bearing turbo you can cook that bad boy in no time flat. often they will be fine at idle, but smoke like crazy under boost. or even just an old turbo or a cheep turbo will smoke.

Could be a cracked ring-land on a piston. if you crack a ring-land the car will often run o.k. but burn oil like crazy under boost.

lots and lots of variables when it comes to a modified car. when did the problem start? had you just changed something when it started or did this develop over time?

good luck, hope that helps
